Smoke alarms are an essential component in keeping our family and pets safe from fire. They are now legally required in all homes in Queensland. Electrical Results can supply and install quality 240 volt hard wired and wireless Photoelectric smoke alarms with a 10 year lithium non replaceable battery backup inside your home to protect your family and possessions.

The current smoke alarm legislation in Queensland requires-

• A smoke alarm in every bedroom (or room that is used as a bedroom),
• In the hallway outside the bedrooms and
• A smoke alarm to be on each storey of a house.
• Smoke alarms must be photoelectric and interconnected.
• They can be hardwired or have a non-removable 10yr lithium battery.
• They must be less than 10 years old and operate when tested.
• Smoke alarms must not be placed within 300mm of a corner of a ceiling or wall or a light fitting
• Smoke alarms must not be placed within within 400mm of an air conditioning vent or blades of a ceiling fan.

Any home that is leased, sold or being substantially renovated must adhere to these new rules. Existing homes must comply by 1 January 2027. For more information on these laws please click here.

Smoke alarm servicing, testing, repairs and replacement

All smoke alarms have an expiry date. Smoke alarms should be checked at least every 12 months to ensure that they have not reached their expiry date and operate correctly. Our trained smoke alarm technicians can replace any smoke alarm that has expired or is faulty.

We recommend a clean and test every 12 months as smoke alarms are prone to dust and insect ingress which can cause false alarms.  Smoke alarms must be kept clean so that excess dust does not build up. Any insects or cobwebs in the vicinity of the smoke alarm should be promptly removed and it is recommended to vacuum the outside of smoke alarms to remove any dust build up. Do not spray any cleaning liquids directly onto the smoke alarm.
